When to File for SDI and PFL in California (Step by Step)

One of the most common leave mistakes is filing at the wrong time. California leave claims follow a set order. Get the order right, and your pay arrives on schedule.

Step 1: Tell your employer

Give HR your expected leave dates. Ask what company benefits you have, like short-term disability or extra leave pay. This step protects your job. It isn't a state claim.

Step 2: File SDI after your last day

You file SDI after you stop working, not before. File on day 9, counting your last day of work as day 1. You file online in your EDD account. Your doctor completes the medical part.

Step 3: Certify and extend as needed

If your doctor says you need more recovery time, request an extension before your claim end date.

Step 4: Move to PFL for bonding

When your disability period ends, you file for PFL bonding. It pays for up to 8 weeks. This is a separate claim from SDI.

For partners

Partners skip SDI and file PFL directly for up to 8 weeks of paid bonding. You can take it right after birth or later, any time before your baby's first birthday.

Keep a list of your dates

Write down your last day of work, your due date, your filing day and your expected return date. One missed step can push back a payment.
