Can You Extend Pregnancy Disability Leave in California?

disability extension pdl sdi

The standard disability period after birth is 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for a C-section. A lot of parents think that's the limit. It isn't. If your doctor says you still can't work, they can certify more time.

What a disability extension is

An extension adds more paid disability time to your SDI claim. It's based on your doctor's medical judgment, not a fixed number. Your doctor decides what you need, and EDD reviews the certification.

How to request one

  1. Talk to your doctor before your current claim end date.
  2. Request the extension through your EDD account.
  3. Your doctor completes their certification.
  4. Keep your employer in the loop on your new return date.

What happens to your job

PDL protects your job for up to 17.3 weeks of pregnancy disability. That includes time before birth, so if you started leave early, count those weeks too.

What happens to your bonding time

Extending disability doesn't shorten your bonding leave. PFL pay (up to 8 weeks) and CFRA job protection (up to 12 weeks) typically start once your disability period ends.

If you started leave early

Some parents go on disability during pregnancy. That time counts toward your PDL weeks. It's worth mapping out the rest of your leave so nothing runs out sooner than you expect.
