Common EDD Mistakes That Delay Your California Leave Pay (2026)
Your paid leave in California is not automatic. You file the claims yourself, with the EDD. That is the state office that sends your checks.
Delays typically come from a few small mistakes. The good news is they are easy to avoid once you know them.
Mistake 1: Filing your disability claim too early
Your disability claim (SDI) has a window. The EDD says to file no earlier than 9 days after your disability begins. For most birthing parents, that is the day you stop working before the birth, or the day you give birth.
I learned this the hard way. With my son, I filed too early. The EDD said I was still working and denied my claim. I spent the first month of his life on hold, trying to fix it.
Mistake 2: Filing too late
The same window has an end. File no later than 49 days after your disability begins. Your doctor also has to send in their part within 49 days. Filing late can delay your pay, cost you benefits, or get your claim denied.
Mistake 3: Expecting pay from day 1
SDI has a 7-day unpaid waiting period. Your first paid day is day 8 of your claim. Plan your budget for that first week.
Mistake 4: Missing the bonding claim
Your bonding time is paid by a different program called PFL (Paid Family Leave). After your recovery time ends and your last disability payment goes out, the EDD sends you a PFL form. If you filed online, it shows up in SDI Online.
You have to send it in. File your PFL claim no later than 41 days after your bonding time starts. Watch your SDI Online account and your mail so it does not slip by.
Mistake 5: Dates that do not match
Your last day of work, your doctor's dates, and what HR has on file should all line up. When they do not, the EDD may stop and ask questions. That means waiting.
Before you file, write down your dates in one place. Share the same dates with your doctor and HR.
Mistake 6: Forgetting your partner
Partners can get up to 8 weeks of paid bonding time too. Many never file because no one told them. Read Can My Partner Take Paid Leave in California? to see how it works.
